Somatic Experiencing
FOR FOLKS IN PHOENIX, ARIZONA & THROUGHOUT THE STATE
Trauma doesn’t only live in our thoughts—it lives in the body.
What Is Somatic Experiencing®?
Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a gentle, evidence‑informed, body‑based therapy that helps your nervous system restore balance, resilience, and a sense of safety.
Somatic Experiencing® was developed by Dr. Peter Levine to address the physiological effects of trauma and chronic stress. Rather than focusing primarily on cognitive insight or detailed trauma narratives, SE works with sensations in the body—such as tension, temperature, breath, and movement—to help the nervous system complete natural responses that were interrupted by overwhelming experiences.
Trauma is not defined by what happened to you, but by how your nervous system was affected. SE helps the body gently release survival energy that may be keeping you stuck in patterns of anxiety, hypervigilance, shutdown, or emotional reactivity.
How Somatic Experiencing® Works
SE sessions move at a slow, intentional pace. Together, we track your nervous system responses in real time and support regulation through:
Increased body awareness (interoception)
Pendulation between activation and calm
Resourcing to build stability and safety
Completion of defensive responses (fight, flight, freeze) without overwhelm
Titration, or working in small, manageable pieces
This approach helps retrain the nervous system so it no longer reacts as though the past is still happening.
What Somatic Experiencing® Can Help With
SE is especially beneficial if you feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected from your body, or if traditional talk therapy hasn’t fully addressed your symptoms.
SE can be helpful for a wide range of concerns, including:
PTSD and CPTSD (single‑incident or developmental)
Sexual Abuse
Chronic stress and burnout
Anxiety and panic symptoms
Depression linked to nervous system shutdown
Medical trauma or chronic illness
Attachment and relational wounds
Natural Disaster trauma
Grief and loss
Somatic symptoms with no clear medical cause
